R & R
Even area rugs need a little “R & R” from time to time…no not rest and relaxation, but repair and restoration! Fine rug weaving is a centuries old artistic tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation; from father to son, mother to daughter. Created by the quick moving, skillful hands of dedicated and fantastic artists living throughout all parts of the world, area rugs are created in such fantastic detail and skill that they often outlive their original owners. However, as much as area rugs are the perfect marriage of form and function, they still need to be reconditioned and mended when damaged. To repair or restore an area rug one must have a lifetime of gathered experience learning the art. One must also be both an artist, and an admirer of another’s work. By continuously honing in on their artistry and handiwork, some weavers have become true masters of the art form.
Mr. Hamid Bashir
We at Utah Rugs are fortunate to have working with us one of the nation’s Top 10 rug repair and restoration experts, Mr. Hamid Bashir (cue trumpets and man with a scroll yelling, “HERE YE! HERE YE!”) Mr. Hamid Bashir is a fifth generation master weaver with over 40 years of experience in the art. He began his education and training as an apprentice at the young age of 13 working under the guiding eye of his father who was also a master weaver. He came to the US at the age of 18 to continue pursuing his passion and to share his wisdom and knowledge with a new generation of weavers. Today, he guides his young apprentices and technicians as he was taught; using the same methods and techniques passed on to him.
It is with his guiding eye and knowledge, he and his team of technicians are able to restore area rugs to their original condition; bringing out the beauty locked within area rugs that has been neglected and making the repairs with nearly undetectable results (think Batman meets weaving). Their work is done entirely by hand and it requires a keen eye for detail and steady patience.

Is there a doctor in the house?! Is there a doctor in the house?!…particularly one that specializes in rugs? Another rug bandit has struck again but this time, he’s taken the rug doctor! (cue old school Batman suspense music). Willie Smith (no relation to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Will Smith) was arrested on Monday in San Bernadino on suspicion of stealing $13,000 worth of Rug Doctor machines. Smith would rent the Rug Doctor machines and then sell them on Craigslist to buyers who were unaware they were stolen merchandise. His devious plan began to come undone when a customer called up the Rug Doctor company to inquire information about repairing the machine (you’d think a doctor would already know how to repair itself). Smith was arrested at the 6900 block of Conejo Drive in San Bernardino, and was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucanmonga on suspicion of burglary and grand theft. No actual doctors were hurt in the event.

This is a very interesting and artistic rug created by Ariel Rojo. This rug portrays Mexico City at night from a satellite view. It’s features are composed of 100% wool and was presented at the abierto mexicano de diseño 2013. The orange specs represent the 25 million populated within the federal district and metropolitan area; one of the most populated areas in the world. With this overpopulation comes crisis, insecurity, corruption and crime, yet despite these political issues; art, design, architecture, music and many other creative disciplines are beginning to engender within the land. Rojo states, “All lights represented in the rug reflect the individuals who inhabit the city and the huge possibility and promise that it could bring to them if all of those lights were seeking the common welfare.” This piece very fascinating not only for its’ design but because of the meaning within its design. It’s a representation that even in the most struggling places there is still hope for prosperity no matter what your situation may be. It is also a representation of how powerful creativity is and how it is constantly changing the world. It makes you question what you’re doing or what you’re not doing do have an impact on the world. With opportunities more abundant than they’ve ever been today and more technological advances, how dare we not do something to impact the world. How dare we accept mediocrity to exist. Open hearts and you open minds. Find the time.
